This case Tinker v. Des Moines Schools was a very interesting case argued in 1968. A lawsuit was filed against the school after three students, Two of which in high school and one in middle school were suspended from school. The school suspended the students for wearing black armbands protesting the Vietnam war. Two other students wore armbands, but were in elementary school and weren't suspended. The students were fifteen year old John Tinker, sixteen year old Christopher Eckhardt, and thirteen year old Mary Beth Tinker.

Shannon Carter, is about a student who is entering the 9th grade and diagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) and Dyslexia. Prior to entering high school Shannon Carter did not have an IEP or a 504 plan. Her parents began the process in high school to help their daughter learn to read, at this time Shannon was diagnosed as she was functionally illiterate. Shannon’s family was upset that the school was doing more to help their daughter be able to perform on grade level. Shannon’s parents began a due process because they felt that the school was not doing enough to assure she was reading on grade level by graduation.
In a predominantly black high school, Freddie Watts is the principal and Jimmy Brothers is the assistant principal. They are both African American administrators. During a heated conversation between the two administrators and Ann Griffin, a white tenured teacher. Griffin stated that she “hated all black folks.” After the conversation there was word that spread among their colleagues which are both black and white.
Counts v Cedarville School District is a case that happened in 2002, in Cedarville Arkansas. This case is an example of a school board trying to censor a certain book in the school’s library. A parent complained about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, saying that the book teaches children that parents, teachers and rules are “stupid” and to be ignored. She also argued that the book teaches children such things as “good witches” and “good magic” (Grogan). The library committee voted unanimously to keep the book and series in the library but the school board overturned the ruling and voted 3-2 in favor of removing the series off of the libraries shelves.
Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley was a case filed against the school board by Amy Rowley parents. They filed this case on behalf of their daughter because the school district denied the parents request for a sign language interpreter. Amy Rowley was a deaf student. She attended Furnace Woods Elementary School in New York. She lived with her parents, who also could not hear.

In the case of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, specific interpretations of the First Amendment and Fourteenth Amendment were applied in reaching a decision by the Supreme Court. On December 16, 1945, three public school students attended school in the Des Moines Independent Community School District wearing black armbands in protest of the Vietnam War. The school board of this district had written a policy prohibiting this just 2 days before after hearing that there could be possible protests. The school board forbade any students to protest the Vietnam War in fear that this would disrupt the school day.
The lethal actions taken by students nationwide, and even worldwide, contribute to a loss of students from suicide in the education system. In the case of Myers v. Blue Springs School District, a 12 year old boy had hung himself due to constant tormenting from fellow classmates because of his Cleft Palate. The bullying occurred from 2001 to 2007 and ended violently in February of 2007 with the 12 year hanging himself. Brandon Myers underwent various surgeries to improve his smiling, which still kept a speech impediment. Despite the hardships, Myers also continuously dealt with the his diagnosis with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, also known as ADHD, keeping in mind of Myers having to deal with his parents divorcing, which did not
The Board of Education wanted segregated elementary schools. Other schools were non segregated. The appellants felt that the Board violated the rights given by the Constitution. They sued the board saying that the system didn’t give Linda Brown the equal protection of the rights given by the fourteenth amendment. The decision was unanimous in favor of Brown.
In “The Sanctuary of School” Lynda applies her personal life to the fact that some people think cutting down budgets for public schools will benefit when times get tough. Also that art, music and the creative ideas will be the first to go when budgets are cut. Lynda had a rough childhood where her parents had money issues and family members that needed temporarily to stay at her home (Barry, 721). The lack of attention from her parents made her look for attention elsewhere in this case the school. Lynda saw her teacher Mrs. LeSane as a mother figure.
Barry writes about the last-minute process of the science fair project and the “importance” of the fair. In the beginning of the essay, he states that the science fair is there “for a good reason: Your teachers to hate you”. This introduces the idea that science fairs are pointless and show no real value as most students do not start their projects until the night before. Barry adds more humor as he mentions the required display boards that cause “many top scientist fail to win the Nobel Prize”. This use of sarcasm shows how unnecessary the rules and the fair are.
In her narrative essay “The Sanctuary of School,” Lynda Barry recounts a story from her childhood that illustrates her relationships at school vs her relationships at home. She tells us how public school was her sanctuary from her unstable home life. It was a stable environment that she depended on. She tells us this when she says ,"[F]or the next six hours I was going to enjoy a thoroughly secure, warm and stable world." Unlike at home, her school was a place she was noticed and cared about.
Therefore, if school was to cancel this activity, many children that are like Barry would have nothing to relieve and relied on. School had always been known to help and educated children’s of all ages, but when it comes to certain situation, school is like another home for children. It provided a new life for children’s and help them regain and improve on their mental stress. For example, Barry ran away from home at night to come to school because it the only place she feels content after her parent argument that night. Without even recognizing that she is gone like any other family do, Barry feel happy because she had more time to spend on school every morning just to paint and draw.
The agricultural animal waste should be exempt because that would keep the EPA from including animal manure as a hazardous waste. This bill has been introduced in U.S., it would exempt polluter litter and manure from the requirements of superfund law. This bill also eliminates the reporting requirements for livestock and poultry producers about manure emissions under the Superfund law. This is being done because some farms are very big and the chemical emission from these farms is very high, therefore, there is a need to control the pollution. There should be a limit on the chemical emission from the farms, so that, they do not cause environmental pollution.
