The Fila Brazileiro also known as the Brazilian Mastiff, has been a banned breed in the UK since the Dangerous Dogs Act was passed in 1991. They are a large working breed native to Brazil known for their tracking ability as a hunting dog and aggressiveness as a guarding dog. They were also used when slavery was legal in Brazil to locate and return any escapees to their masters, run away cattle back to the herd unharmed or protect herds from predators such as jaguars. It is thought the appearance and traits we see today are a result of cross breeding numerous breeds including the Mastiff, Bulldog and bloodhound.
