Pit Bulls: A Study in Nature vs. Nurture Did you ever think that you would not be able to own a certain breed of dog because of the way society perceives its breed? Did you ever think that members of a breed of dog would be immediately euthanized when brought into pounds? That is exactly the case with the American Pit Bull Terrier which is more commonly known as a pit bull.
THE HUNGARIAN HOUND aka TRANSYLVANIAN HOUND When the nomadic Magyar tribes finally settled in the Carpathian basin, around 895 A.D. they brought their animals with them, including, horses, sheep, cattle, shepherd dogs, guard dogs and ancient hunting dogs. Subsequently, these Magyar hunting hounds mixed with existing hounds that were left behind in temporary settlements by nomadic migrations, including Eurasian nomads, Iranian nomadic pastoral people, Romans, Celtic tribes, and Huns. By 1000A.D the Christian kingdom of Hungary stretched from the Holy Roman Empire to the Byzantine Empire, including Transylvania with the Carpathian Mountains forming a natural border in the SE. During this time the mixture of hounds in the kingdom had evolved into the Pannonian Hound, which is the ancestor of the
According to Save a life’s Facebook page, in Los Angeles alone there are 200 Pit Bulls killed every day, making it 1,400 killed a week and 72,800 killed a year just in Los Angeles alone (Save a Life, 2012)! If my solution of promoting education and training for Pit Bull owners and their dogs were to be enforced the number of Pit Bulls killed would decrease sufficiently. This would be the case because all Pit Bull owners would be held responsible for educating themselves on the breed before adopting a Pit Bull and properly training their Pit Bull throughout its life in their family with the proper tactics and socialization skills. After a few years of continuous work by Pit Bull advocates and the dogs’ owners, there would be a noticeable change in how the world and society views Pit Bulls. There would not be any news reports of a Pit Bull attacking and killing again.

Breed-Specific Legislation (BSL) is a law that bans or restricts certain types of dogs based on their appearance, usually because they are perceived as “dangerous” breeds or types of dogs. BSL has targeted pit bulls for many years trying to ban them and will not address the fact that a dog of any breed can become dangerous when bred or trained to be aggressive. Some states have actually enacted BSL specifically to the owners of pit bulls in Denver (Pit). To this day, Denver still has the law, however, it continues to have significantly higher dog bite-related hospitalization rates than other counties (Pit). Ironic, right?

Has there been a situation where it was hard to find, out what type of dog to get? I had that trouble too, but I always decided that I wanted to get a Siberian Husky. Instead of getting a Boxer or a Shetland Sheepdog (Shelties), I should get a Siberian Husky. They all have a background, the cost for purebred, the cost for adoption, and certain ways to take care of them. Boxers are a good dog to have, and Boxers have a lot of history.
