Stereotypes about Ethnic Characters in Hollywood
As a multi-ethnic country, the United States is still at the forefront of tackling racism. It exists in even the world’s largest movie capital. Thus, if some actors are not white people, their career path will not be easy. This matter has not only appeared in the past – when racism is a serious problem but also present in the present. There are many movies whose characters are Asian or African but are present by the white. This is the trend that the public has a hard look at Hollywood. There are many racial and gender equality movements which have emerged vigorously between the movie capital because Asian women are not valued in this field. In accordance with the article “Asian Women in Film: No Joy, No Luck” in the book Signs of Life in the USA, Jessica Hagedorn states, “In Hollywood vehicles, we are objects of desire or derision; we exist to provide sex, color, and texture in what is essentially a white man’s world” (350). The author wants to show that Asian women are considered sexual objects for men, and they are not respected in Hollywood. Holly directors do not value the true talent of Asian actresses because they think women only know to take care of their family and children. For example, in some Asian countries, wives always represent resourceful women and are willing to endure to care for their family and children. Besides, they do not only do good housework but also do good work out of society. Therefore, it is not fair when Hollywood writers and directors have stereotypes about Asian women. Some Asian female actors say that filmmakers often look for prototypes that are available or succeed on screen, and they do no really recruit actors or look up actors. Needing to change the thoughts of Hollywood writers and directors who have so many stereotypes with black artists and do not create opportunities for black artists who aspire to enter the huge movie industry of the world. For example, last year, when the Oscar was announced, a wave called to boycott the Oscar because the twenty nominees for acting categories were all white people. Therefore, the ceremony would miss many familiar faces, mostly black actors. There were a number of Oscar-winning actors participating in the wave of boycotting Oscar because they felt unjust for talented black actors. They created the fights on the media to awaken the national spirit and the perception of people to protect the rights of black people. The Oscar prizes were somewhat affected by this incident. American media have identified that all twenty acting nominees were white and occurring in both consecutive years was unlikely to coincide, but rather a scandal. That is a reason that Hollywood writers and directors need to have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters that create the fight of showing the national
