Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada – is the biggest automobile manufacturer in the world (The Telegraph, 2014) with a market share of 14.3% in North America (Wall Street Journal, 2015) and a global market share of 11.8%. This makes Toyota third after GM Corporation and Ford Motor Company. Toyota has developed and launched green chemistry, water recycling and cleaning technology at its plants in Cambridge and Woodstock Ontario. However, excessive phosphate entering the waterway causes dramatic increase in the growth of phytoplankton, algae, and duckweed in natural water resources, which increases the level of artificial additives. (Water Research Center, 2014). This biological process is also known as “eutrophication”. Above mentioned organisms use huge amounts of oxygen and nutrients, and prevent sunlight from penetrating deep into water. This makes reservoirs uninhabitable for fish and their breeding, and in turn, causes the death of aquatic life.
During the manufacturing process, Toyota uses roughly 46.5 million litres of fresh water with phosphates per year to wash out oil and dirt from auto bodies before paint is applied (Simone, 2014). Correspondingly, the number of vehicles-holding population will increase as well. Consequently, taking into consideration limits to growth concept, without reusing natural resources and developing technologies that will support efficient use of raw materials and increase production efficiency, the production level will reach the limit of the carrying capacity of the Earth. By improving current technologies, establishing innovations in technological processes, as well as reducing business operations impact on the natural environment, Toyota has started moving towards green chemistry initiatives at its production lines. At first, it seemed simple, however, it is not. In order to bring it to perfection, especially for the painting process, many engineering ideas and testing are required. Toyota’s plant ‘became the first in North America to recycle surfactant’ (Simone, 2014) and it is going to be implemented at other Toyota’s plants in the near future.
