An organisation in the media that is undergoing pressure for change is supermarket store chain Woolworths. Along with Coles, Woolworths form a duopoly of the Australian supermarkets sector, with both companies having a combined 80% market share. Due to this poor financial performance, there have been major pressures on Woolworths for a change in management, strategy and direction. This pressure eventually culminated in the resignations of Chairman Ralph Walters and CEO Grant O’Brien this week.
Lewin’s force field analysis theory states that driving forces support change while restraining forces act to decrease or stop change. In relation to Woolworth’s boardroom change, the management’s recognition that the current situation is unacceptable is a driving force, as it supports change through the installation of new Chairman Gordon Cairns, who has promised the company will “be great again”, starting with the appointment of a new CEO.
As previously mentioned, Woolworths main competitors Coles and Aldi are continuing to make large strides in the industry, competition which has had a detrimental impact on Woolworth’s performance.
