Having different church denominations is a necessary part of Christianity. Without them, at least one person would always become dissatisfied with the worship technique. This way, they can simply go to a different church, and worship the Lord there instead. I am an army kid, and I move around a lot. Because of that, I have seen and experienced many of the diverse church denominations out there. To truly understand them, you need to know their history.

They both had spiritual awakenings in a prayer meeting, and went on to create the Methodist church. In 1769, as the American population grew ever larger, John Wesley sent two of his preachers to the colonies to grow the Methodist movement. Their names were Richard Boardman, and Joseph Pilmore. Two years later, Richard Wright and Francis Asbury went to America. Francis Asbury then became the face of the Methodist church, and helped expand the church even larger. After his death, the church continued to grow, and became the size we see today.
The Presbyterian church traces its roots to the 16th century Protestant Reformation, when John Calvin, a French lawyer, started a reformation of the church. In the 1630s, Presbyterians were some of the first Reformed immigrants to come to the new world. They moved west, and started churches as they went. The Presbyterian movement continued to grow, until in 1706, seven Presbyterian ministers came together in Philadelphia, and formed the Presbytery of Philadelphia.
