Ur is an example of a civilization because it had the five characteristics needed to be considered one. Having advanced cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keepers, and advanced technology are the five characteristics. Ur was a huge civilization located in the region of Sumer, which is now located in Southern Iraq. The people of Ur had a class system, religious orders, and a thriving economy which were helped by their ability to irrigate their crops. Some of the people of Ur worshiped Moon Goddess Nanna in the ziggurat of Ur. Said ziggurat had a temple on top where the people worshipped and made sacrifices.

First, to be considered a civilization, you need to have advanced cities. In order to be deemed an advanced city, there must be a center of trade. You also need to have a large population that relies on the city for their center of trade. Other examples of advanced cities are Uruk, which had a population of about 10,000 people, Lagash, which had a population of roughly 19,000 people, and Umma, which had a population of about 16,000 people. …show more content…

In order to have specialized workers, you need to have a steady food source, and not have to send out hunter-gatherers. The Neolithic Revolution played a large factor in this because early people were able to switch from food gathering to food producing, also known as farming. You also need to have a considerable sized population to have specialized workers, such as weavers, priests, scribes, merchants, government officials, soldiers, potters, teachers, and farmers, as they only produce goods in their specialized field of
