There are many different interventions and approaches speech language pathologists use when dealing with their patients. Floortime is a system that is not only used in many clinics, but also practiced at home. Floortime allows the child to develop on their own using their strengths and abilities while collaborating through play with the therapy entity. The therapist or parent is supposed to get down on the child’s level, meaning literally the floor. The purpose of this is to be on the child’s level. Then, they are going to allow the child to use their imagination and take part in whatever it is that interests them. The therapist will engage in the activity that the child initially demonstrated. For example, a baby will start out by moving their mouth. Then, you would teach them to rock back and forth. After, they will learn how to crawl backward and eventually forward. Then, they might grab onto a table and sit back down. Eventually, they will take a couple of steps while holding onto the table. Finally, they will learn to stand and walk without the support of the table. The same concept can be applied to any new skill a child is going to learn. There are developmental levels that the child will go through before mastering a new task. The Floortime approach allows the child to complete these level on their own terms and learn in an environment that is warm and inviting to them. Another important factor in Floortime therapy is using circles of communication. The idea of circles of communication is the respond to every sign of communication that the child extends. For example, if the child smiles at you then you will smile back at them. That would complete a circle of communication. A Floortime specialist usually meets with an individual two to five hours a day which would cost about $500 per session. However, Floortime is just an approach to therapy so it will be accompanied by other techniques depending on the problem. This type of therapy is available in the Orlando area. A local clinic, Child Life Therapy, uses the approach and has even offered a sensory summer camp featuring Floortime in the past. Here, they have Speech Language Pathologists who have taken special courses to be able to apply the Floortime approach to their therapy sessions. On the other hand, a parent could also apply Floortime therapy at home. There are courses and workshops that a parent could take to learn exactly how to use the Floortime approach.
