Focus Sociological Theory

The movie Focus, social process theory was exhibited which suggests that criminal behavior is learned in interaction with others and that socialization and learning process occurs as a result of group memberships. This was portrayed in the movie when Will Smith who played the character Nicky met with Jess, a foster kid with no future who is a novice in the criminal activity. Nicky taught her how to steal from people without the victims been aware that they have been robbed. Jess was desperate of becoming a member of Nicky’s team but he insisted she becomes a professional for her to be considered part of the team. At the initial stage of her learning process, Jess was uncomfortable with the kind of clothe and shoe she was wearing and complained about it. She also was unable to understand the terminologies used in criminal business. She was taken into casinos, bars, and hotels to watch and train how to carry out a smooth and successful operation and after training and coaching; she learned what it takes to be successful in their chosen field. His continuous interaction and coaching of Jess lead to her first assignment after which she was introduced to the organized and socialized criminal group with the leadership of Nicky whose view committing a crime as an acceptable means of livelihood. Jess interaction and socialization with this criminal group trained her to become a professional criminal.

This theory asserts that all behavior is learned in much the same way and that crime is also learned. It lays emphasis on the role of communication and socialization in the acquisition of learned patterns of criminal behavior and the values supporting that behavior.
