In Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt’s article, The Coddling of the American Mind, both authors are ASSERTING that the general public uses the use of what they call trigger warnings entirely too much. Lukianoff and Haidt BELIEVE that the extended use of trigger warnings is leading to a degraded and fragile state of mind. As a social psychologist, Jonathan Haidt has made several observations concerning the overall elevated concern for the emotional well being created by the public and for the public. In Fahrenheit 451 the author Ray Bradbury introduces the theme that books are integral for independent thought. Early in the book Montag is seen as an average joe just doing his jobs not really thinking about much until he meets Clarisse, mid way for throughout their conversation she says “you never stop to think”(Ray Bradbury 12). At this moment Montag stopped laughing after every remark she made because he took moments to think. Foster develops the concept that an illness is never just an illness in How to Read Literature Like a Professor. This is evident in Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God through the symbolism of the illnesses that impact Janie’s life. Foster explains that a prime literary disease “should have strong symbolic or metaphorical possibilities” (Foster 224). Hurston utilizes this concept in her novel, the characters developing illnesses that represent Janie’s freedom and independence.
Born on June 23, 1927, Bob Fosse grew up in Chicago and was the second youngest in a family of six. His father, a traveling salesman for The Hershey Company, was also a known vaudeville entertainer. From a young age, Fosse took an interest in dancing and performing and was supported by his family. Considered a young prodigy, Fosse was taught dancing, specifically tap, early and, before even reaching high school, was performing professionally at local nightclubs. During his young teenage years, through his performances, Fosse was introduced to the style of vaudeville dancing, a popular entertainment style that mixed burlesque dancing, song, and comedy.
Discuss a book (other than the Bible) that has impacted you and why: A book that has really affected me is Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. The story is about Melody, a girl with a photographic memory and severe cerebral palsy causing her to be unable to move and talk. While she is incredibly smart, she is unable to express her intelligence, and she is stuck in an adaptive education classroom for educating those with disabilities. The story follows Melody as she joins regular classes and gains access to better technology that helps her communicate.

Wednesday, October 22 Reading Response 2 “Living Will” by Danielle Ofri is about an author who is a doctor who came across a patient that is suicidal. “They All Just Went Away” by Joyce Carol Oates is about a young lonely girl who finds herself attracted in entering abandoned house and is entranced by other peoples lives and what they left by. Although these stories are very different, I believe both the authors share a similar idea, but different outlooks, of how the main characters in each essay struggle to do the right thing. “Living Will” gives us a better perspective of what doctors today have to face with their jobs. The author, Danielle Ofri, came across a severely ill patient, Wilburn Reston, which really makes her think.
In the reading “Son” by Andrew Solomon, horizontal and vertical identities are compared and dissected through the lenses of society’s perceptions. A vertical identity is when “attributes and values are passed down from parent to child not only through DNA, but also through shared cultural norms”, while a horizontal identity is when “someone has an inherent or acquired trait that is foreign to his or her parents” (370). Solomon being a gay, dyslexic man brought up as an anti-Jew Jew, has well delved into the controversy of the ethics between what is considered an illness versus what is accepted as an identity. Leadership is the ability to guide or influence others with an objective of achieving a desired outcome. It involves influencing beliefs, opinions, values, perceptions, or behaviors of an individual or a group, and it is an amalgamation of inherent personality traits, learned skills, and it is a response to situational stimuli. I believe that, at any particular moment, where two or more individuals are interacting, one of them will emerge as the leader the other(s). To me, this means leadership role is fluid, and it changes as situational stimuli changes. For instance, during interpersonal interaction involving two individual, the leadership role has potential to shift from one individual to the other, as the situational stimuli changes.
