Life on Mars

Is it possible for humans to live on Mars? There are many things that scientists have to look at before a planet is suitable for human life. Jennifer L. Holm used scientific facts to write “Follow the Water” although it was a fictional store she did have some facts such as it is not healthy for a human to live on Mars because there is deadly radiation, very little water and there is limited amount of food, low gravity and rough weather.

One of the ways that Mars is unfit for human life is because of the deadly radiation. In “Follow the Water” they have houses made plastic to protect them from the radiation. However it does not protect them from the horrific dust storms. The reason that the radiation would hurt them is because Mars does not have the magnetic field like earth does so it would be quite …show more content…

In the story Georgiana says that they don’t have water and the only time they get water is every two months a shuttle would arrive with their water. Because of the insufficient amount of water, they would have to recycle what they could.

Mar does not have food which is very important for humans to have. Like the water they would have to send a shuttle up to Mars to deliver the food. But that would get very expensive, so the colonist would have to make their own somehow. One of the ways it would be hard to get food is because Mars has a very thin atmosphere. It does not have a lot of strong sunlight, so it would be very hard to garden. If the colonists wanted anything to grow, they would need special greenhouses.

The weather on Mars is crazy. The average weather there is only -81 degrees. During the summer it can get to 70 degrees. If there were colonists on Mars they would have to wear special spacesuits and they would have to live in special houses. There are also major dust storms. These dust storms are so powerful that they can block the sun for
