Living during the Elizabeth Age must have been hard with its very basic and bland food and drink options. The Elizabethan Age is considered to be a time of English renaissance that inspired national pride through classical ideals, international expansion, and naval triumph. At that time, the kinds of food eaten depended very much on wealth and status. Poor people had humble and unvaried diets during this era while the rich of the Elizabethan Age ate very well. Due to water being poor quality and the fact that it was tasteless, Ale and beer were the most popular beverages because they were safer to drink and had a much better taste. In fact, children during this era also drank beer and other alcoholic drinks due to the water condition. Interesting parts of food in the Elizabethan Era include meals of the wealthy, meals of the commoners, and beverages during this time.

During the Elizabethan Era, water was avoided by most because of its lack of taste, and it was rarely ever clean. Elizabethans also had to be careful if they drank water because it sometimes contained diseases including typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. For this reason, beer/ale and many other alcoholic beverages became popular because they were safer to drink and tasted much better. Many households brewed their own alcoholic drinks during this Era. Similarly, wines were also popular but more for the wealthy and only on special occasions because it was more expensive. Unlike ale/beer, wine costed as much as twelve times the amount of ale/beer at this time! These types of drinks were available at many inns, taverns, alehouses, and basic food serving places known as “ordinaries.” Alcohol was the most regularly drunk drink and water was the least common, but there was no treatment for water, making it unsafe to
