The United States ranks top in obesity and cardiovascular related diseases among the developed nations especially the western Europe. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program as well-known as food stamps, is a government assistance on food purchase for those who live under the federal poverty line. The food stamp recipients reached record high recently due to impact of great recession and still many people are struggling to make ends meet.
The program has been a great relief for families who has children or large family. Each month funds are added to the recipients account which the amount varies by their income and their criteria. Thanks to first lady Michelle Obama move on healthier eating, most of the schools have implemented the program where it serves fruits and vegetables. “One of the major causes of obesity in kids is an unhealthy diet composed mostly of junk food” (Youth leader Blog).
This is the main cons for serving junk foods in school’s cafeteria. It is important to let young kids to get used to eating healthy food habit. If they are fed with junk food at an early age, probably they will end up eating junk food into their adult years. Recently the study shows that obesity related illness has substantially increase among young ages. It is school and government obligation to fulfill their duty to gradually eliminate junk food in school cafeteria.
“Schools who have limited funds also don’t have much choice but to serve more affordable junk food” (Youth Leader Blog). The pro for serving junk food in school cafeteria doesn’t benefit the kid’s health but it all has to do with school budget and funding. Many states are struggling with budget deficit after the great recession hit 9 years ago. For some school serving fruits and salad can be a luxury as it requires more labour and burden of high produce bills. In western Europe the trends are cutting back on sugar and providing healthier alternative with calcium, fiber, protein and so forth.
