Sports play a major role in the entertainment of people today. Whether it is kicking a soccer ball around or shooting a basketball, sports are an important aspect of today’s society. Arguably, football is one of the most enjoyable sports that has been brought about. Countless fans are gathered together to watch his or her favorite team beat the opposing team. The players go out putting their bodies on the line just searching for a huge hit hit. Whenever a big hit happens, the fans in the stadium go berserk, cheering for the incredible play that just occurred. The opposing view believes that growing up playing football teaches many valuable lessons such as leadership or teamwork. It also can teach brotherhood with the team and to persevere through many difficulties. While this may be true, if the player suffers a concussion he may forget all of what he has learned. A concussion can cause long term memory loss, or short term memory loss depending on the severity. Another argument is that it is the player’s body and that he should be able to decide what he believe is best for himself. If he wants to take the risk of harming his body, then let that be his decision. However, no one should let anyone willingly destroy his or her own body. Letting someone destroy his or her body as we watch in excitement is just unmoral. People who oppose my view also argue that an increase in padding would prevent concussions. This may appear as a good idea; however, experts have tried inventing helmets to prevent them. The results have only helped prevent some, but have not fully prevented concussions. This was stated, “…no helmet prevents all concussions; all helmets protect a player's skull; some protect his brain better than others” (“Preventing Concussions”).
