According to the article “When Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football” by Bruce Watson (2014), it recognizes Roosevelt’s effort to stand up and fight for the changes football needed, so that our society could enjoy the game today. Although, Theodore Roosevelt, had never played football, he had a great love and concern for the future of the game. Eric Buchman, a popular TV writer, recently wrote an article for the New York Times titled, Football Has Become Too Real to Watch. Buchman’s argument, which is not only laid out in the title but also in the last sentence of the article, is that the joy of football, something many have experienced for years, has been sucked out of fans due to the reality of current issues within the NFL. Buchman wrote this article in an effort to inform football fans, and even everyday people, of the often-omitted issues involved with the NFL. Out of the three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, there is one that confuses me more than the others, logos.
If the reader is a child, he or she can be then scared of being hurt and having to potentially deal with concussion related injuries later in life. In the true story based movie and the documentary, the dangers of head injuries in football are laid out for the viewer. Dr. Bennet Omalu discovered the brain injury chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE; however, the NFL was in denial about the effects football had on the brain and had on causing CTE. I believe that the NFL’s denial to the accusations were detrimental to many football players and that serious consideration should be taken into the way football is played overall. When Dr. Omalu originally diagnosed CTE on Mike Webster and the NFL denied that football was the cause for his death and disease.
