Forced Ranking
What is forced ranking? Forced ranking is a controversial workforce management tool that uses intense yearly evaluations to identify a company's best and worst performing employees, using person to person comparisons. In theory, each ranking will improve the quality of the workforce (Bethel 2011). Companies seem to think that forced ranking is the best way to run a company. This is not only a bad way to loose moral in employees but it is also has employees competing against each other.
Forced Ranking has been working in the workplace for many years. Companies feel they can bring their best employees into higher ranking positions. If there are two employees that are in the same position and are applying for an open position, the company will check and see which of the two employees are more qualified for the job which seems to be proper routine. Using the management work tool to compare employees work performance can sometimes not be the best way to find the best employee. The company may use the tool and come to a conclusion that one employee’s performance out ways another employee’s performance. Employees seem to have a problem with helping other employee’s when they know what type of management tool is used for moving up in the company. This can make the moral of the employee’s low. Employees should want to work as a team while at work to make sure the job gets done accurately and on time. Everyone shouldn’t have to be out for themselves and competing against each other.
