1. Using ideas from the chapter, describe Dan’s and Asher’s styles of leadership. Northouse (2009, 109) defines as task leader as one who is solely goal oriented. This describes Dan almost perfectly. He creates checklists to ensure everything is done properly, and he is knowledgeable enough to know what to ensure is completed. He also leads by example and is said to accomplish more in an hour than most people can in a day. The reverse of that is relationship leaders, which Northouse, (2009, 109) defines as a leader that focuses on their people. They will make them comfortable in the environment provided. How will Asher’s employees, who are used to being able to manage themselves in their own way, respond to Dan’s task-oriented style? Asher’s employees would feel pressured and possibly inadequate. They wouldn’t receive the same positive feedback and could misconstrue how task oriented he is with them as condescending. Previously they knew what they had to be done and accomplished that task, but now as if they are inadequate at what they have to do, must fill out a checklist to ensure everything is completed properly. This could also cause them to feel overburdened due to having to fill out paperwork, and clean. 3. How will Dan’s employees, who are used to being given clear direction and procedures, respond to Asher’s more relationship-oriented style? Dan’s employees could feel overwhelmed at the start. The structure that they used to have and follow would be removed from the equation, and they would be expected to handle everything on their own with only encouragement to support them.
