Formulate Goals and a Statement of Intent I have had the privilege of being an educator in high poverty elementary schools for the past eight years. The majority of my classroom experience had been in fourth grade teaching math. My current and past administrators recognized my leadership qualities as a classroom teacher and utilized those skills to assist other teachers on the campus. As the lead teacher of the school, I was able to work with the teachers on my campus, model lessons, assist with creating lesson plans and assessments, lead professional development meetings about best practices, and collaborate with lead teachers around the district and state. Students have to be encouraged to face challenges in order to realize that with perseverance, they can and will succeed. In viewing Angela Lee Duckworth’s video, “The key to success? Grit.”, the term “growth mindset” stuck out to me. I attended a training this past summer by the Flippen Group, “Capturing Kids’ Hearts”, and one of the contributing factors presented to help teachers develop a motivational classroom environment and to build community in a school was having an “excel mindset”. I firmly believe that my teachers and parents contributed to my personal success. From an early age, my parents instilled the value of an education in me, but I believe the most contributing attribute to my success was and continues to stem from my support system. Both my parents and teachers encouraged me to face challenges and believed in me and built me up daily. I believe that is my strength as an educator. I have that “excel mindset”. My students were reminded every day that they were loved, valued and that I believed in them. Often times, educators are the only ones laying that foundation for
