During the course, several concepts were learned from Discipline and Punish from Michel Foucault that could be applied to Dexter. The first concept talked about in Module two that relates to Dexter is The Gentle Art of Punishment. It is the art of establishing representations of opposing values and obstacle-signs. During this concept of punishment, the person committing the act must follow obstacle-signs and obey them. Foucault came up with six conditions to the art of those punishments. One, the act must not be arbitrary. Foucault explains how there should be an immediate link between the crime and punishment to make it necessary. Two, the complex of signs must decrease the desire for crime and increase the fear of the penalty. Three temporal modulation is needed. Four the punishment should be directed at other, not just the criminal. Foucault wants to punishment to affect everyone. He wants to make sure it is not just the person who committed the crime. For instance, the crime that was committed affected not just the criminal but who he or she did it too. Five a learned economy of publicity exists. Foucault explains that the crime affects the population not just the person. People are more likely to not engage in law-breaking behaviors when they know the punishment. Punishment is an act of mourning. The idea that the person who cause the pain is now gone and won’t be able to cause any more pain. Six the traditional discourse of crime is inverted.
