Fourth of July Surprise It was midday one Fourth of July, long after the animals came out to relax in the sun, when Mom, Dad, Nana, Pupa, Memaw, and I were having a bonfire in my backyard. The wind was still. The pine trees towered over us like giants. Somewhere in our field a blue jay chirped, I could hear it through the popping and crackling of the fire. As I pass the faded red barn I stop and walk back. Now on the inside of me half of me wants to go sit on some tractors, the other half of me wants to keep walking. I argue with myself for a few seconds. The side that wanted to walk lost. I carefully walk over to the big red barn and stop right before I get in. I take a look at all the tractors that we have. (there’s only five). I see a red one, a green one, an orange one, a grey one, and one that is a mix of orange and red. The orange one is my favorite of them all. It’s not big at all but it is the perfect size for me. I walk over to it then I remember it is Pupa’s tractor. “Whatever” I say to myself as I help myself up to the seat. If this was mine I would change the oil gauge and the oil filter. I want this tractor so so bad. I hop on the seat and I drift from the world and remember the time when I first saw this tractor. I was about seven or eight when pupa brought it over to take to the Goodells park for Fall Harvest Days. I thought it was huge when I waddled over to the back tire that was the same size as me. I get off the seat forcing myself to leave. I bolted past the other tractors and back to the
