One very simple and obvious way is that it bans the practice of hydraulic fracturing (better known as “fracking”), which injects tremendous amounts of toxic chemicals into Santa Barbara’s natural aquafires, and the city’s water supply. Coupled with the fact that the community is already experiencing water shortages, contaminating that supply with hazardous waste chemicals essentially limits the water supply even more; restricting a vital resource to residents of Santa Barbara. This is not to mention any of the other adverse environmental health effects of hydraulic fracturing. This alone can amount to the net result of not only few people remaining in the town, thereby lowering the numbers of people who would be taking the jobs that fracking offers, but it could lead to other, negative long term effects on the environment left to generations that follow.
