What I want students to take away from my learning segment is being able to correctly identify names of equal parts, know the differences between a fraction, unit fraction, numerator, and denominator, so students can be successful to write a fraction that represents a part of a whole or to describe a part of a set which will have students develop a deep understanding of fractions.

Day 1:

To measure what students will learn in lesson 1, students will be given a worksheet, which includes 4 problems that will have students using their procedural, conceptual, and reasoning skills to recognize regions that have been divided into equal-sized parts. Students will have to identify a unit fraction by looking at a shaded shape, write fractions to explain how they got their answer, and will use reasoning skills to write a fraction that deals with ordering a pizza that is cut into eighths to see how much was eaten. Throughout the learning segment, I will also be asking comprehension questions to measure what students are learning. During the assessment, I will be able to provide verbal feedback when talking with students, especially if I notice they’re struggling and need additional help. If this happens, I can give student the feedback that they need that it is perfectly okay to look around the room to guide them to find an answer and use their handouts from the lessons.
