The 1931 film Frankenstein is not only a retelling of the story of Genesis but also an inversion of the traditional Godly roles and a warning of the dangers of trying to play God. The first mention of God creating human life and how they interact is in Genesis 1:28-30. “28 God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ 29 God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything …show more content…

It is finally shown the sunlight, it is controlled by Dr. Frankenstein, and the creature is awed and amazed at the light. Kawashima states that this scene is supposed to represent God giving us light as in Genesis 1:3-4, “Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:3-4). In the same article, it is stated that Dr. Frankenstein in his attempt to create life from pieces of the dead is a connection to the Tree of Life. As discussed in the lectures for this class, the protection of the Tree of Life is why Adam and Eve were originally cast out of Eden. The Tree of Life can give someone the power to create life and live forever, which is what Dr. Frankenstein was trying to accomplish. Also, in the opening scene the man says Frankenstein is “a man of science who sought to create a man after his own image without reckoning upon God”. This is almost a direct quote from Genesis 1:24, “Then God said, “Let us make humans in our image, according to our likeness.” This and the numerous other examples above show that the story of Frankenstein (1931) is not a direct retelling but was greatly influenced by the book of Genesis and the Bible as a
