After studying how others choose to pursue happiness, I believe that I am ultimately in control of my pursuit of happiness, regardless of what happens to me.
Because the lawyer from “The Bet” and the monster from Frankenstein both ended up as miserable people, I fully agree with Viktor Frankl that individuals are in control of their own pursuit of happiness. After reading about how some pursue happiness, I believe that people control their pursuit of happiness to some extent but that life events and circumstances can also have a big impact on this pursuit.

He tried many times to feel included with the people, but it got him no where. He then began living in the backyard of the De Lacey family,where he stalked them to sudy and see how they live in their house and seen how secure and happy they were. One day he gives up hiding and waits unil the children left so he could try to talk to the old man living there with the others. It was going good and the monster was feeling happy for once because he was being heard and not scarred off, but the man was blind so it was just honesty from him. But once the children came back, they scared the monster off because they assumed he was hurting their father. Even though the monster done some shameful things to his creator from being betrayed, he felt that the comments and glares from the humans made him feel that his happiness would never be, so he went back to his old killing sprees. Frankl says that we ultimately control our pursuit of happiness and desire to give our lives meaning. He gives out factual information that makes you rethink your past situations or recent ones thinking if you’ve done right for your happiness. He aslo mentions that “ everything can be taken from a man, but one thing; the last of the human freedoms- to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances”. This quote reminds me of the saying that ‘our action speaks louder than words’ because we can say things out of kindness, but actions speak louder and can show that you are considerate and happy of being kind to others and for yourself. Happiness is key to being fulfilled with your own life by being strong-mindedand having self- reliance. After reading “The Bet”, studying Frankenstein, and considering Frankl, I now believe, more than anything, that I am the only one ultimately responsible for my pursit of happiness and wellbeing. For me, this has not always been the case. For most of my life, I did not understand that always putting others first and myself last would become more of a conflict. I understand that I want to see people happy and at those times , it made me happy, but life goes on and it drains and makes you overlook that your own happiness wasn’t fulfilled.
