The date is July 27th in the year 1936. Franklin D. Roosevelt is celebrating his Democratic Party’s nomination victory in Philadelphia, for his possible second term serving as President of the United States. This speech laid the foundation of a continued promise to the American people that he would continue to elevate the successes of the New Deal and bring America out of the darkness of The Great Depression. Roosevelt was so confident in his New Deal he proclaims a promise initially on July 1st of 1932, “I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.” (The American Yawp, 2007). Roosevelt needed to find a way to reach the second generation and the small businesses. He needed to guide this second generation to success, just as the New Deal guided their fathers through recovery of the economy. Roosevelt speaks to them now when he says this, “Today we stand committed to the proposition that freedom is no half-and-half affair. If the average citizen is guaranteed equal opportunity in the polling place, he must have equal opportunity in the market place.” (Franklin Roosevelt’s Re-Nomination Speech 1936) He is very confidently saying he will stand to take away from those who seek only power, and give to men who are working for freedom, the pursuit of happiness, and the protection of future generations. As Roosevelt takes office for a second term and achieves what legislation is calling the “Second” New Deal from 1935-1936. He dedicates himself to programs like the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), the United Automobile Workers (UAW), the Fair Labor Standards Act, and most importantly the creation of the Social Security Act
