At Western Michigan University, there are many micro-cultures. One particular micro-culture I want to belong to is a sorority by the name of Delta Sigma Theta, incorporated. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, 103 years ago, by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek-lettered organization.
Through research online, I am aware that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., was founded at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana on January 5th, 1911 by ten visionary men; Elder Watson Diggs, Ezra D. Alexander, Byron Kenneth Armstrong, Henry Thomas Asher, Marcus Peter Blakemore, Paul Waymond Caine, George Wesley Edmonds, Guy Levis Grant, Edward Giles Irvin and John Milton Lee. Also through my research, I have learned that the organization is comprised of men who aim to carry out its motto of “Achievement in Every Field of Human Endeavor.” And that due to the organizations focus on leadership and service, I am aware of some of its well-known initiatives such as the Kappa Beautillion from the Guide Right Program, Kappa League and its philanthropy

1. Lisa Wade explores the culture of sex within college campuses and how it has impacted the lives of the students she has researched in her book American Hookup: The New Culture of Sex on Campus. A major issue that she probes is the fact that her students are lonely and not in a physical way, but rather a mental way. The presence of hookup culture is causing students to feel out of place, unempowered, and objectified based on their traits. This peer pressure is undoubtedly inflicting objective harm causing students to feel unhappy (Wade 18).
The first notable member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated that really sticks out to me is Umzae George Washington Carver. He was initiated in the Gamma Chapter in the year of 1918. To begin I selected him, because he was a very familiar name. I remember learning about Umzae George Washington Carver in the elementary and middle school. With creating over 100 different uses for the peanut, soybean, and sweat potato he was a very prominent African American man in the 1920s.
Dorothy Siegel’s argument in the essay “What Is Behind the Growth of Violence on College Campuses?” is persuasive. Siegel persuades the reader by presenting her points and validating them with facts and statistics. One of the strongest aspects of the argument is that contrary to popular belief, students are committing a majority of the crimes that take place on college campuses; the students “themselves may become the assailants”, not persons from outside of the campus. She further supported this by pointing out that students tend to know their attackers. Another strong aspect of her argument is that campus violence is due to substance abuse.
Focus groups were based on drinking trajectories during college and sorority status. While women of all drinking levels reported feeling pressure to drink “heavily” because of the favorable impression they could make on their male peers, primarily women who were frequent binge drinkers throughout college felt that “drinking like a guy” described their own drinking behaviors. While women reported that being able to “drink like a guy” provided them with a sense of equality with their male peers, analysis of the transcripts suggests that “drinking like a guy” had less to do with gender equality and more to do with the emphasizing women’s (hetero)Sexuality. One of the main questions that each freshman asks their selves when coming to college is, “Should I rush a fraternity or a sorority, and what are the benefits?” People hear the stereotypes more than they hear the positive aspects. Many individuals have the wrong idea when it comes to sororities and fraternities. There is much more to Greek life than what people portray it to be. People portray Greek life as if one is paying for his or her friends, hazing takes place, and everyone is just partiers.
In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.
College, and college life is something you think that never ends but something that comes to an by a snap. As we come into college, we join in multiple activities and organizations to get involved. One of the highly-participated or known to be organizations on campuses are Greek life. For some students, Greek life is something new, but for others it was known as they become seniors, or from their sibling and cousins. A myth or fact of brotherhood and sisterhood?!
The most common crime in American colleges is rape. Twenty percent of women are sexually assaulted in college and only five percent are reported. It is common for a woman to be raped by an acquaintance than a stranger. In most cases, women are assaulted after being drugged, at a party, or studying in a dorm room alone. There are several steps colleges could take to prevent and stop rape on campuses.
Given the common social connection of both drinking before sexual activity and sexual assault in college settings, social-related drinking variables including drinking to adjust intentions, social drinking thought processes, and perceived drinking standards were inspected. One predictor of sexual assault among college students is alcohol use by victims. I definitely agree with this predictor. I think there is a lot of pressure put on college students to go out and get really drunk with all of your friends. Drinking can turn into a competition which can lead to heavily intoxicated men and women. When a person is heavily intoxicated, they have no idea what is going on around them.
