Critiquing our Culture Stereotyping is usually defined as a predetermined, overwhelming belief about a meticulous group or category of people. In this day in time our popular culture often reinforces many different stereotypes, and at times over generalizes them. In the following, I’m going to talk about how the popular television series, American Horror Story: Freak Show, The Big Bang Theory, and Keeping up with the Kardashians infuse many different stereotypes into their shows. The shows listed above, give America’s youth a false view of reality, and how certain people should be treated in our society. The television show is a documentary-style and records the actions of the Kardashian’s everyday life and their over-sensationalized drama. Keeping up with the Kardashians focuses on the upper class in our society. Kim Kardashian is to thank for the family’s fame. Kim was only noticed when her publicly leaked sexual intercourse stunt with musician Ray J. Before the tape leaked she was just another woman, which only further promotes the over-sexualized nature of women. As the show developed the sisters realized they could no longer remain famous for just Kim’s actions. The Kardashian sisters began to break in the employment industry, searching for jobs that are considered less important than any males job. This is a cultural and gender stereotypes that demonstrate a female’s lack of ability to hold a job that contributes to society. The final and most prominent stereotype shown in this television series is the family’s reliance on the use of beauty to get ahead. The girls pursue jobs that emphasize the beauty of their physical appearance. The Kardashians have also put a lot of money into their love of plastic surgery. This speaks volumes, to young women that they are not pretty they way that they are and they should change.
