The Struggles Of Frederick Douglass As a young man Frederick Douglass was struck with the inability to read nor write these troubles dawned on him due to his state of slavery. Frederick Douglass was born a slave, a slave will not read, a slave will not write, and a slave is not a human, these thoughts were planted in the head of his white owners cursing him to inequality and illiteracy. Imagine never being able to write a love letter or read a funny note, imagine never being able to put your ideas on paper and making them permanent. Frederick Douglass had a great mind, one that was chained up and held back by the slavery and illiteracy his forced lifestyle brought along.
In the beginning of Fredrick Douglass 's autobiography, he emphasizes how white children and slave children are treated in very different ways. For example, in the text it states that white children could tell their ages and they know when their birthday is. But on the other hand, slave children were completely opposite, they did not know their age or their birthday, because they are deprived of that information by their masters because they wanted to keep the slaves ignorant. He also emphasizes that he cares about who his father is because, according to the text, it states that there are rumors of his father being a white man and there are ideas of Douglass 's master being his birth father. Fredrick Douglass was a black slave during the 1800’s who escaped from his master and came to the North. His age is unknown as stated by Fredrick Douglass (1845/1995), a great orator who brought many to the abolitionist cause, in his work, Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, “I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot County, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it” (p.1). While Douglass was a slave he was convinced that education was the path to freedom, he also witnessed the horrors of slavery, and would most likely hold the same views in today’s world as he had back in the 1800’s. Douglass believed that education was the path to freedom and the view was correct.
In “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass narrates in detail the oppressions he went through as a slave before winning his freedom. In the narrative, Douglass gives a picture about the humiliation, brutality, and pain that slaves go through. We can evidently see that Douglass does not want to describe only his life, but he uses his personal experiences and life story as a tool to rise against slavery. He uses his personal life story to argue against common myths that were used to justify the act of slavery. Douglass invalidated common justification for slavery like religion, economic argument and color with his life story through his experiences torture, separation, and illiteracy, and he urged for the end of slavery.
Frederick Douglass in his narrative “Why I learned to Read and Write” demonstrates how he surpassed many obstacles along the way towards getting an education. These obstacles not only shaped Frederick’s outlook on life but also influenced him in his learning to read and write. Frederick’s main challenge was that of not being an owner of his person but rather a slave and a property to someone else. Frederick Douglass lived in the time when slavery was still taking place and slaveholders viewed slavery and education as incompatible. The slave system didn’t allow mental or physical freedom for slaves; slaveholders were to keep the apt appearance and slaves were to remain ignorant.

Douglass says that slave’s minds were “starved by their cruel masters”(Douglass, 48) and that “they had been shut up in mental darkness” (Douglass, 48) and through education, something that they were deprived of, Frederick Douglass is able to open their minds and allow them to flourish into the complex people that they are. By showing a willingness to learn to read and write, the slaves prove that they were much more than what was forced upon them by their masters.
Douglass was born into slavery and was denied an education. When Douglass was young, the mistress had taught Douglass how to read until her husband found out and told her she had to stop. She then became furious and violent when Douglass was learning on his own. In paragraph 2 Douglass said, "I have had her rush at me with a face made all up of fury, and snatch from me a newspaper, In a manner that fully revealed her apprehension.” Douglass knew that if he learned how to read, there would be major consequences from the mistress and the master, but he knew that knowledge was worth taking a risk.
Every slave’s journey to freedom is imbued with hopes, struggles and triumph. Each individual narrative complex and intriguing. Reading and writing help Frederick Douglass to form and articulate his ideas about slavery by discovering the true meaning behind the word “abolitionist,” which led him the to find freedom. Moving to Baltimore helped Douglass find opportunities at a young age. He realized how important reading was when his masters got upset when he was learning how to read, which gave him the need to learn in order to find out the true freedom behind life. Learning how to read was important to Douglass life because he started to figure out how to read newspapers and books when he was left alone.
