Story Structure: the Key to Effectiveness The documentary Free the Mind was directed by Phie Ambo and released on May 3, 2012. It is about a seven day experiment for veterans suffering from PTSD and children who suffer from ADHD. They use breathing exercises to try and help them deal with their symptoms. Throughout the week the participants see how well the exercises are working for them even within the short amount of time. The film was effective in showing that breathing can help to rewire the brain through the story structure because as the film went through the story the people were starting to feel the effects that the breathing and meditating had on them. Steve is still very anxious in the first few days as shown by the scene in the diner where he has to go outside to calm down. By the next couple of days he starts to be able to calm himself down slightly to where he can be in a stressful situation longer. Rich starts to realize that when he came back from serving he was not coping as well as he could have been and that he was actually just existing in the world rather than living in it. He is starting to realize how he can start to help himself overcome his problems. Will was still a distraction and would sometimes let his emotions overcome him in the first few days but he was able to calm down quicker than he had before. During the week Will was given a snow globe that was supposed to help him with his temper and anxiety along with the breathing exercises and it seemed to be helping him to calm down. When he had taken the cup to get the dirt from someone else they had both of the children breathe. They also told him to shake up his snow globe to help him calm down before having the two kids talk out there problem. Through the middle of the film each of their individual progress is showed. Also through the middle the viewers can see that Free the Mind related to the logos because it was a documentary so it had a lot of explanations of what they were doing with diagrams and statistics.
