The Rise of Freedom Riders
How did the civil rights movement in Australia influence the Freedom Riders in Australia?
Digging through the black power movement called the Civil Rights in the United States around the 1950’s and 60’s made a powerful impact on many black societies such as students families who are facing segregation by whites who call themselves as “real Americans.” Famous speakers like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X made huge impacts on the civil rights movement. Both speakers gave inspirational speeches and gave hope to the black communities that they can win against the segregation and become equal. By the late 1960s, the civil rights movement emerged in Australia out of the Aboriginal neighborhoods in Sydney and Brisbane (Trometter). The influence of the movement on Australia created the ride of Freedom riders who are protesting for Aboriginals who are being segregated (National Museum Australia). The reason why the movement has an enormous impact on the rise of Freedom riders is because the Aboriginal activist had “recognized similarities between their situation and the African American’s sociopolitical position” such as there are demands “for equality of treatment in education, health, and legal representation, the abolition of discriminatory legislation, [and] to end to police harassment” (Trometter). The aboriginal activist who are part of the Freedom Riders are motivated by the nonviolent protest done by the civil rights movement. This helped the Aboriginal activist to fight for the Aboriginal people who are being segregated (Campion). The students in Australia also fought for the Aboriginal people which helped the people gain “citizenship, financial assistance, and equal pay” (Campion). In addition, the civil rights movement has a long history of “white domination of its indigenous people” in the United States which is the indistinguishable situation in Australia where there is white domination over the Aboriginal people who are the natives in Australia (Minchin). According to Gary Foley, an Aboriginal historian contends that “there had been minimal examination of the dynamic Black Power Movement that emerged from the… major Australian cities in the early 1970s;” Foley states that there during the time where African Americas were discriminated, the Black Power Movement had been in many news which influenced the Aboriginals to become more motivated to fight for the aboriginal creating the Aboriginal Black Power Movement” (Trometter). The influence of the United States on to Australia dominated the “commercial television networks” and were famous in the Hollywood film industry which attracted many Australians, especially to those who are Aboriginal activists (Minchin).
