The French Revolution The period between 1789 and 1871 was a turmoil for the country of France. The French economy had an impactful rise and fall during this period, due to many reasons. There were unjust rulers, and people who heavily disagreed with them. This whole time period is labeled as the French Revolution. The French Revolution came about for many reasons such as the rulers, the type of governing and the ongoing conflict between the people and the nobility. Amongst all of the issues that caused the French Revolution, the kings that lead up to the Revolution were a major problem. When Fleury passed away, Louis XV was left total control. He was reckless and not a strong leader. Louis failed to make the country better than how it was left to him. This, in turn made him die as one of the most unpopular and defeated kings of France. After the death of Louis XV in 1774, Louis XVI came to power. This new king showed potential. He rose at a very unfortunate time because had to pay for his antecedents recklessness and spending. The nation was nearly bankrupt. When Louis XIV first came to power, he was greeted the same way Louis XV was. The difference was, this king showed that he could actually make the country better. When Louis XVI came to power he was weak. The nation was nearly bankrupt, and though it seemed irreversible Louis had different ideas than just taking advantage of what little the nation had and using it for the rich. When he first took the throne he had decided that nobles and clergy should pay taxes like the rest of the people. It was unfair that the aristocracy had advantages that the others did not. This meeting was essentially a meeting of representatives of the First, Second, and Third Estates. The First Estate consisted of the clergy; the Second Estate consisted of the aristocracy; and the Third was made up of the common people. Jacque Necker, a reinstated financial minister, influenced this meeting greatly. It was he who persuaded the King to call this meeting. The meeting of the Estates General was held in order to vote on tax. The initial idea was to have one vote per estate. The vote was to determine whether or not the first and second estates should pay taxes along with the third estate. Both the clergy and the aristocracy did not want to pay taxes. It was evident that the vote would be unfair. The initial way the Estates would vote on taxes was one vote per estate. Since both the first and second estate did not want to be taxed, the third estate would be outvoted. When the Third Estate requested more votes, the were denied so they walked out. This led to the Tennis Court Oath. The Tennis Court Oath was a promise made by the Third Estate that they would not disassemble until they get what they want, which was fair treatment. The reason this promise is called the Tennis Court Oath is because it was created and pledged in an actual tennis court. The King, influenced by the nobility, kicked the representatives of the Third
