Throughout the story, it is shown that tension between the Capulet and Montaguee families has been an ancient subject. This tension has continued for many years and is verywell-known throughout Verona. Even Though this unbearable conflict between these families is a major underlying cause for the deaths of the young couple, some characters also play a role in the demise of young Romeo and Juliet. Friar Lawrence should be considered as partially responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because of his actions throughout the play. Even though he might have been trying to help Romeo and Juliet, what he did throughout the play is questionable as helping Romeo and Juliet. In Act 4 Shakespeare writes “Take thou this vial, being then in bed,And this distilling liquor drink thou off; When presently through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease. No warmth, no breath shall testify thou livest'' ( lV. i. 95-100). This establishes that Friar Lawrence gave Juliet a “ sleeping potion” to have a sleep for a certain amount of time. Even though he has planned this out to work perfectly for Romeo and Juliet this eventually leads to the young couple's demise.
