Who is responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet? Two “star-crossed lovers” killed themselves because they couldn’t be without each other, but there is more to their deaths than meets the eye. In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, two teenagers from different families that hate each other fall in love and get married in secret. After Romeo was exiled, Juliet went to the Friar for help. However, his actions and decisions ultimately lead to both Romeo and Juliet, tragically dying. The person primarily responsible for their deaths is Friar Laurence because he married them for his own benefit, he made up an irrational, dumb plan, and he left Juliet alone. When Romeo and Juliet fall in love they go to him. Friar Laurence says, “In one respect I'll thy assistant be, For this alliance may so happy prove, To turn your households' rancor to pure love.” (Shakespeare 2.3. 90-92). Friar Laurence married them for his own benefit, to make peace between the Montagues and the Capulets. He did not thoroughly think it through or consider what this may lead to. It was not very responsible of him because Romeo and Juliet being married in secret was part of what led to their death. When Romeo gets exiled, Lord and Lady Capulet want to cheer Juliet up and have her marry Paris. She doesn't want to marry him and goes to Friar for help. She says that she would rather die than marry Paris and be without Romeo. Friar has a plan. “Which craves as desperate an execution As that is desperate which we
