Love, often referred to as one of the strongest emotions a being feels, can lead to either greatness or downfall. William Shakespeare, a famous playwright and actor from the 16th century, creates an in depth description of forbidden love. Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare’s most well-known piece, is about two teenagers from opposite houses, the Montagues and the Capulets. Their families are sworn enemies, but that does not prevent the star-crossed lovers from forming a relationship. Despite this rivalry, Romeo and Juliet continue on this pathway, which ultimately leads to their deaths. The Friar established and created plans for Romeo and Juliet throughout the story. While some express that his ideas were flawed, it was not his fault that he wanted to end the Capulet and Montague feud, and he was not aware that the arranged marriage was going to be moved up one day. From the beginning of the novel, Friar Lawrence was a crucial part of Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage. He was the first person they came to for help, and he states his worries for their future: “In one respect I’ll thy assistant be,/ For this alliance may so happy prove/ To turn your households’ rancor to pure love,” (2.3.97-99). Earlier in this scene, when Romeo first proposed this idea, Friar was shocked at how he moved on so quickly from Rosaline. He was hesitant to accept this request because of the damage it may cause the children. Friar Lawrence points out that the only reason he agrees to marry them is because of the hope of ending the competitiveness between the families, and he also makes it known that this is completely Romeo and Juliet’s choice. Juliet tells Friar that she is being forced to marry Paris, and shows her unwillingness to do so. He devises a plan for Juliet that allows her to avoid this marriage: “Hold, get you gone. The protagonists are still adolescents, with underdeveloped brains, and are in a phase in their life in which rebellious and dangerous actions are taken. Lord and Lady Capulet do not pay enough attention towards Juliet and her personal well being, and spend the majority of their time worrying about the threatening feud with the Montagues. Romeo and Juliet’s love story correlates to the theme of love conquering all. In modern society, these morals and ideas are still relevant, and many say that when you are in love, nothing else seems to be as beneficial. It is important to understand the power that love contains, and be aware of the risks and rewards that come with
