In William Shakespeares play, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence is the reason of Romeo and Juliet's death. The first fault Friar Lawrence executes, is to marry the two characters without their parent's consent, right after Romeo had just loved his perfect Rosaline. Without thinking about the situation the friar foolishly agrees to marry Paris to Juliet even though he had just married her to Romeo. The worst mistake was giving Juliet a fatal sleeping potion. All of the actions combined ruined the young couples lives and resulted in their deaths. Friar Lawrence secretly marries the Romeo and Juliet, and causes more stress for the lovers. Since the friar was in a way a town doctor he had easy access to herbs and such. Friar: Take thou this vial, being then in bed, /And this distilling liquor drink thou off; (1V, i, 93-94) Friar Lawrence gave Juliet the potion and a seemly good plan. His plan was for Juliet to drink the potion in bed when she was alone and it will make her appear dead. Then once her parents have put her in the Capulet's tomb Friar would send Romeo to extract her from the tomb before she even wakes up. It sounded easy enough though when Friar Lawrence attempted to send word to Romeo explaining the plan he had produced, it never made it to him. Friar: Hold! Get you gone, be strong and prosperous /In this resolve, Ill send a friar with speed /To Mantua, with my letters to thy lord. (IV, i, 122-124) The friar should have gathered his thoughts and come up with a plan to save Juliet and Romeos relationship when he learned that Romeo never got the letter. Instead it seemed like Friar Lawrence gave up on the tragic situation. Romeo heard about Juliet's death and immediately traveled to Verona to behold her corps with his own eyes. Driven by grief Romeo promptly killed himself and lay with Juliet's 'dead' body. When awakened Juliet saw her poor lovers corps and also killed
