Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking discovery on evolution during the mid 19th century shocked the minds of many. The idea that man is simply not a product of God but instead, “descended from a less highly organized form…for the close similarity between man and the lower animals in embryonic development, as well as innumerable points of structure and constitution” (Lualdi,183). The legitimacy of the Bible began to be questioned, Scientists began using the theory to shape their conclusions, and governments began using Darwin’s “survival of the fittest” logistics as a means to justify taking control over foreign land. The purpose for publishing his findings was not meant to denounce the beliefs of the church in fact, he insisted that it was possible to believe in the bible and evolution. The only take away from it was that God’s creations and the miracles that occurred were to be seen as metaphors rather than legitimate occurrences (Lazar, Mar 14). Biblical criticism began to arise in favor of Darwin’s theory. Friedrich Nietzsche, a German Philosopher, claimed in his piece The Gay Science, that God is dead and we as humans have killed him and “there has never been a greater deed: whoever will be born after us will be on account of this deed a higher history than all prior history” (Rogers,223). Nietzsche saw looking to God for answers ass unnecessary in modern society. We ourselves were God like in the sense that we have the knowledge and reason to discover why things happen on our own. Humans no longer turn to the bible for understanding events but rather we can use deductive or inductive reasoning to discover the answers on our own (Lazar, Mar 14). In a less radical sense God was not necessarily dead. Many individuals stuck with the Catholic ideals and continued to read and cherish the holy bible while still understanding that the miracles said to have occurred may not be valid but, the lesson learned in each gives reason to continue to follow Christianity.
