Friendship to me means a person who always sticks with you no matter what. The theme of friendship is explored within this novel because George and Lennie both depend on each other. They both take care of each other and work together. George and Lennie both have a really strong bond. They also defend each other, that shows how much they care about each other.

George and Lennie are a great example of, “friendship is necessary to human survival” because they always stick together and are good friends. On page 4 and 5 it says, “His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool; drank with long gulps, snorting into the water like a horse. “Lenny!” he said sharply. “Lennie, …show more content…

George wants Lennie to stick around with him. On page 16, George tells Lennie that if he’d ever get in trouble, Lennie has to come back to the bush and hide until George comes. This means that George is looking out for Lennie and making sure he doesn’t get in trouble. George also looks out for Lenny by defending him from people that talk about him. Page 39. “It jus’ seems cuckoo like him and a smart little guy like you travelin, together. He ain’t no cuckoo, said George, He’s dumb as hell, but he ain’t crazy. An’ I ain,t so bright either.” This shows that George is defending Lennie from people that are making fun of him.

Lenny rely’s on George for physical and emotional survival because Lennie makes sure he does everything George tells him to do. On page 22 it says, “Lennie smiled to himself. “Strong as a bull”, he repeated. George scowled at him, and Lennie dropped his head in shame at having forgotten.” This explains that Lennie understands and listens to George so George won’t get mad at him. Another example is on page 26 that says, “Lenny looked helplessly at George for instruction.” Lenny does this so he won’t do say something he is not supposed to or something that will make him and George look
