In “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton, we are introduced to a wide range of characters whose actions and personalities are widely affected by the environment in which they grew up in. This is a very pervasive theme in the book, as the main element of the story is the rivalry between the street gangs “The Socs” (short for Socials), and “The Greasers' ' In Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Socs are depicted as a gang of well-off rich kids who aren’t afraid to show it off, and the Greasers are the polar opposite of this, most of the Greaers grew up impoverished, without one or both of their parents, or grew up in abusive households. This dynamic and disparancy between the individuals of the gangs leads to some interesting interactions between the characters.

In the essay "Friends, Good Friends - And Such Good Friends," Judith Viorst argues that different levels of friendship exist, ranging from casual acquaintances to best friends, and that it is essential to recognize these various types of friendships. Viorst employs rhetorical devices, such as contrast using anecdotes and parenthesis to include humor and evoke pathos to explore the nuances of friendships. Her purpose is to examine different friendships by reflecting on what makes a good friend and offering insight into how readers can identify and appreciate true friendships in their lives. She writes in a light-hearted and conversational tone to encourage Redbook readers, typically young adult women, to invest energy into meaningful friendships.

Friendships Within the Pilot Episode of Freaks and Geeks Interpersonal communication is crucial to the development, advancement, and maintenance of friendships. Friendship is quite a unique form of relationship, as it can be formed from many things; whether it be hardships and trauma or simple relatability; and it can stick through life even without any physical or literal tie between people. An interesting example of this is Max and Liesel’s friendship from The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, as they bond in a unique way that is truly only applicable to friendships. They develop a bond based on their similarities, beliefs, and situation, and it is a unique show of how people can connect. The main reason that Max and Liesel become friends is due to the things they have in common; it may not seem like they have many, but the things they do have in common are important and help them understand each other,
‘We were friends.’ (Jonsberg 2004, p. 43) Friendship is represented accurately and efficiently in Barry Jonsberg’s The Whole Business with Kiffo and the Pitbull. Calma and Kiffo have shared experiences, shared interests and genuine care for each other which contributes to their strong friendship.
Friendship can be a key element or theme to a work of literature. Friendships can be expressed in different ways throughout their story. Most stories express friendships as a high and low in one’s life. A friendship can be strained or broken because of outside forces, such as political views that are occurring in the story’s plot. “Recitatif” by Toni Morrison shows that one’s race can put a strain on one’s friendship.
