For instance, “the French government built more prisons than schools, they have slain their patriots, they have robbed their natural resources, they have enforced unnecessary taxes, people are living in a state of poverty, and two million Vietnamese people suffered from malnutrition and they were starved to death.”(Zinn
I can infer that the people of Vietnam are very brave. In paragraph two of section one, “The Chinese Dragon”, the author states that “the Vietnamese were anything but peaceful subjects. This explains that the Vietnamese would not be enslaved by the Chinese without fighting for their freedom. Next, in paragraph three of section one, the author writes that “the Trung sisters led the first uprising, then drowned themselves rather than surrender” to the Chinese. This shows that the Vietnamese warriors would rather die for their independence than be taken prisoner by the Chinese.
Most people don’t know much about what exactly happened in the Vietnam War. Should this war have even happened? Many Americans believe this war was unnecessary for the armed forces to participate in, especially because of the damage caused in WWII. Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They carry, offers a collection of short stories in which each expresses the different Vietnam experiences. Every story in this novel was impressive for its own unique reason.

President Lyndon Johnson declared a campaign to win the “hearts and minds” of the Vietnamese, and the United States decisively lost that battle. At the beginning of Truong’s book he shares what ideas are going through his heart and mind, “I would have been willing to accept almost amy regime that could achieve real independence and that had the welfare of the people at heart. I was quite prepared to give Ho’s Northern government the benefit of the doubt on this score”(36). This quote illustrates the minds of a Vietnamese population desperate for independence in any form. They had been subjected to outside imperial forces for hundreds of years prior and were poised to accept any leader willing to help them to independence.
Tim O 'brien 's first love was named Linda. They were only 9 years old but he believed it was love. Months after their first date he found out she had a brain tumor and weeks after that she died. Tim writes stories about her to try to bring her back. However, she is also the reason he is so terrified of death.

The Vietnam war memorial was is one the greatest memerials ever in the united states. It’s such a privilege to be written on that wall and it 's such a honor to be on it. I don’t see why you wouldn’t want that to be a memorial, there are so many great people upon that wall that deserved to be remembered and honored. I feel like this monument should never be ever thought about tearing down.

(Reader, 171) Even after creating the speech and Japan’s surrender that following year in 1945, the French would be defeated in May of 1954 in the battle of Dien Bien Phu where U.S. officials would send support to Vietnam making a temporary agreement that included troops, military advisors, stopping elections, and preventing corrupt politicians. (YAMP, 266) This would later be lost as communists would later reclaim Vietnam and the efforts would be in vain as thousands of troops' lives were taken soon before the unification occurred.

The fifth characteristic listed is Vietnamese people love knowledge and have quick understanding but hardly learn from the beginning to the end of things, so their knowledge is not systemic or fundamental. In addition, Vietnamese people do not study just for the sake of knowledge (when small, they study because of their families; growing up, they study for the sake of prestige or good jobs). Actually, these are two assumptions contained both positive and negative sides. It is difficult to appraise exactly knowledge of one person, not to mention knowledge of a nation.
