The play Fuenteovjuna has points that are to critique, and they are it does not give a clear depiction of the period in which it is played. Its publication was in the fifteenth century in Spain but some scenes of the play do not portray the times as they were in reality. The scenes are more of a hypothetical time addressing issues that did not affect Spain at the period. It is important for plays to mirror society, with its problems and at the same time offer solutions that could help change its outcome. Throughout this paper I will share my thoughts and opinions before and after watching the play.

To begin with, the wardrobe choice was a key factor as it represents many things in a play such as age, genre. When I first walked in the Quientero Theatre at University of Houston, I didn’t expect the theatre to be pitch black in the beginning with minimal lights. The separate lighting helped emphasize the mood and plot of the play. This address the fleeing of the soldier, the king and queen, and the town’s people who used the commanders head a s a trophy in act 3.This also emphasize what was going on at the same time the king and queen seen as high and mighty above all others and someone to be adored. Another noticeable factor was the lighting, which endlessly focused on the main artist in question, providing a clear set up and enhancing the plot as well as the theme of sadness. Also, the separate lighting which focused on the small areas emphasized the significance of the king and queen as the most visual aspects of the theatre. For example, the light followed the actors in the scene where the king and the queen were talking to the injured soldier. The spotlight enabled the viewers to focus on the plot of the play, especially the urgent situations like that of Commander Guzman. The light improved the mood of the play by showing the difference between the plots through varied lighting. The importance of the emphasis was to portray the king as someone more recognizable than the rest, someone to be admired and adored. All this helps in the smooth transition from one scene to the next without bringing in the themes of monarchy and
