The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was a very controversial law that caused much resistance. The Fugitive Slave Act’s main purpose was to return escaped slaves to their owners, and additionally, they would penalize anyone who would help shelter the runaway slaves. There was tension between states; those who opposed slavery tried to provide a safe haven, while those who supported slavery agreed and supported the Fugitive Slave Act. This led to revolts and, therefore, sparked the beginning of the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Act was a significant event that led to the Civil War because of the tensions rising in the states. Tensions and debates over this question would eventually result in the Civil War. As a time traveler, I would try to advocate for the rights of slaves and for the abolition of slavery. Although, during this time period, my efforts would only do so much. Many people do not believe in or advocate for the abolition of slavery. Abraham Lincoln did not support slavery, and he was not a very strong advocate toward the beginning of his presidency in fear of how states would react. I would try to stop these laws from passing because everyone deserves to be treated with decency. To stop these laws from going through, I would try to show how inhumane slaves are being treated and try to change people’s perspective on how slavery is perceived. I would show this by getting former slaves or current ones to share what they went through and how they were treated. I think hearing it firsthand, would ultimately change their perspective and opinions on whether or not slavery should be around their nation. These changes would make the civil war less likely because they would change how people view slavery, hopefully making more people advocate for the abolition of
