The target child of this observation is Sofi. She attends full day childcare at The Little Skool-House International @ Tampines Junction. Sofi has been attending the preschool since she was two years old. She also has a younger sister who is currently two years old and attends the same preschool.
Sofi is currently five years and three months old. She is a Malay girl and comes from a Muslim family of four. As Chinese is the only Mother Tongue language offered in the preschool, Sofi learns Chinese as her second language.
Sofi is Kindergarten One this year and she is a pupil of Warren class. There are fifteen children in this class, of which nine are boys and six are girls. The main teachers caring for this class are Teacher Lynette and Wang

From the observation, Sofi is able to identify and classify animals by their different traits and has met the developmental norms of her age group. She is also able to logically classify the animals in various ways during the discussions, often sharing her ideas about the different possible ways of classification. Most of her peers were only able to group objects based on the colours. Scaffolding techniques are the means by which the more knowledgeable other, a teacher, guides the learner within the learner’s own zone to reach a greater understanding and mastery of the task. The teacher can give verbal cues to help Sofi or provide her with a stronger pair of scissors. The teacher can also provide her with different materials to work on. Encouragement and praises may also help Sofi to gain confidence in completing the
