An excellent example of the innovative use of technology is ICAM (Information Collection for Automated Mapping)—an easy-to-use, PC-based, mouse-driven mapping system created by Chicago police officers. ICAM has been installed in all twenty-five of our police district stations so that police personnel—from beat officers to commanders—can quickly and easily generate maps showing the crime patterns in their particular neighborhoods. Just as important, ICAM is allowing police personnel to share this information with the community, so that it can be better informed and empowered to solve problems. ICAM is only one example of how we are using technology to support police.” Community members have been given cell phones specifically for contacting their beat officers quickly.
Offenders don’t realize the reality when reentering society because they aren’t giving the necessaries resources. The reality is how the criminal justice system have label them. When an offender is release from prison their life is over due to the way the criminal justice have develop. Many would concur that there is a problem with strength based. As clearly demonstrated there will always be pros and cons towards an issue.
Take social media for an example; according to brennacenter.org, "Social media has become a significant source of information for U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies for purposes ranging from
Bryan Stevenson, a public interest lawyer devoted to assisting the incarcerated, poor and condemned, shared his thoughts on how “we”, americans, cannot fully evolve due to the lack of consideration for human rights and basic dignity of all persons, in his recent Ted Talk, “We Need to Talk about Injustice”. Stevenson gives numerous statistics which shows the numbers growing in reference to people who have been incarcerated. He continues on to go into detail about unfairness throughout the justice system in America. Stevenson brings to light the issues amongst the justice system with various scenarios that have occurred in the past. I agree with Bryan Stevenson that America is flourishing when it comes to technological advancements and innovations,
America’s criminal justice system need to make a change. We are constantly wasting millions of dollars on prison cells that won’t even be needed if they gave citizens who broke the law quick and easy punishments. In our society today many youths are being sentenced harsh punishments due to petty crimes, these harsh punishments include five or more years in prisons. Our criminal justice system is just plain corrupted and unreasonable. Judges show give fast punishments which are less severe to citizens who has broke small laws.
The assessment of risk is a critical part of child welfare advocacy. The review of instruments of different instruments for assessing risk and safety in child welfare focuses on instrument reliability, validity, outcomes, and use with children and families of color. The evaluation of risk assessment instruments generally includes broad categories of areas related to abuse and neglect, behavioral descriptions, procedures to determine levels of risk, and standardized forms to record this information (Rycus & Hughes, 2003). In the process of screening for a case study, instruments are used to determine if the child or family needs further assessment, treatment, or intervention services. In evaluating the Van Sise family I have found that the following
Overtime lawmakers grasped onto the aggressive combative responses to crime, which led to mandatory sentence legislation, sentencing enhancements, severe anti drug laws, and bills that would finance prison expansion sustaining prison growth and higher incarceration. The majority of the data that was gathered was over a time span of forty yearsThe research design that was used in this study was method of data
These types of changes would create significant change if fully implemented. As discussed, the open file system will test the integrity of the prosecutors work and leave little to no room for error and corruption. Better education for prosecutors will provide a better understanding of the consequences they face if misconduct is demonstrated. Finally, harsher penalties will strike fear into the prosecutors who consider applying corruption into the system.
Prosecutors have begun to change their process for screening, investigating, and prosecuting certain criminal offenses; emphasize intelligence collection; and pay increased attention to precursor crimes such as identity theft, fraudulent documents creation, and money laundering. More prosecutors will develop a well-defined role for their offices in responding to terrorism as they have an opportunity to use the updated legislation. While we still have a long way to go we are trying hard to correct the problems we still face today involving terrorism we as a country need to strengthen all relationships with the law enforcement , the public and outside countries that could pose a
Technology and Communication systems are critical tools in policing. The rate of technological change in recent years is so fast that I personally believe that is safe to predict that in a mere few years from now, current technology will be substantially improved if not obsolete. Technology is constantly changing the way police departments operate in many ways. When I first started in EMS 20 years ago, I had intended to use dispatching as a gateway into policing (instead of Emergency Medicine.) Back then, Computer Aided Dispatching was ground breaking technology, GPS did not exist, tracking of units was done with paper, graphs, whiteboards and bulletin boards.
In 2000, U.S. agencies surpassed the $100-billion-a-day barrier in spending to incarcerate individuals with serious addiction problems. Rehabilitating and managing offenders who misuse alcohol has proven to be extraordinarily difficult. Despite traditional sanctions and ever-increasing terms of incarceration, addiction drives many of these offenders to continue committing crimes, resulting in a revolving door. Alcohol- and drug-involved offenders are overwhelming the criminal justice system, creating unwieldy court dockets, burdensome caseloads, and overcrowded jails and prisons. Yet, programs and sanctions have had little impact on the rate of alcohol-involved crime.
Criminal profiling has been and will important to both the court system and law enforcement. Profiling helps police by limiting the field of investigation by providing what kind of individual is most likely to commit a crime focusing on the type of behavior and characteristics. It consist of a collection of leads, and is described as an educated guest or attempt to provide certain information about a specific type of suspect (Geberth, 1981). It is also a way of providing behavioral patterns, trends and tendencies. Law enforcement has used behavioral forensic for many years for solving crimes by creating psychological profiles of criminals.
When an individual is accused of a crime, there are numerous steps the federal criminal justice system must take in order to serve righteousness. The steps through the federal criminal process are: investigation, charging, arraignment, discovery, plea bargaining, preliminary hearing, pre-trial motions, trial, post-trial motions, sentencing and appeal. The investigation of a crime can begin in various ways such as an officer observing a possible drunk driver speed on the highway, a 9-1-1 call stating there have been shots fired in a neighborhood or even a person stating they’ve been subject fraud. Once the investigation has begun, there are many agencies that staff criminal investigators to accumulate and provide information to attorneys in the respective district of the crime.
The criminal justice system is a collaboration of different organizations who work together to uphold the law, keep the peace, and restore justice. Day in and day out the criminal justice system is forced to deal with unlawful issues that pose a threat to the peace of our society. These issues can range from within our homeland to international threats. Although there are many issues facing modern day criminal justice it seems that there are two in which our nation may be battling the most. Those two issues are drug trafficking and terrorism.
As what everybody knows, criminal justice refers to the system and agency within the government which focuses on safeguarding the peace and order of the society. Among the agency goals are the mitigation of crimes and implementing appropriate disciplinary actions among those who have violated the laws or giving suitable rehabilitation programs (Neocleous, 2004). The scope of the criminal justice system varies depending on the state or country. In the United States of America one effective approach of the system is having an enhanced coordination with the law enforcers, with the law court and with the correctional agencies in order to fully protect the rights of every citizens (Fuller, 2005).
