Coming of age is a stage of development that involves growing up. Different poets and authors explore this dramatic stage through how strong characters and speakers gain more experience, and how people react when their relationships change over time. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, the text shows that you have to go with the flow and do things more independent to stay out of trouble, Meanwhile, in Evening on the lawn by Gary Soto, and Fifteen by William Stafford, both realize that you must grow up and accept reality and the idea of growing up with independence. “Fifteen” shows how the speaker really learns to take responsibility and to move on with your own life journey while still having dreams but also accepting reality. …show more content…

In Fifteen by William Stafford, the poet shows experience and memories from the past. In the poem, it states, “Thinking. back farther in the grass I found the owner just coming to, where he had flipped over the rail.” (16-18) This quote shows memories and how the poet is thinking about experiences he has had in the past. “We could find the end of the road, meet the sky on our seventeenth” (11-12) The quote shows experience and how you can find the end of the road to life and the end of success. In "Evening on the lawn" by Gary Soto, the poet states “ And suddenly rising to my feet when I saw in the early evening, a cloud rolled over a section of stars.” (5-6) The poet shows experience from the past, present, and the future. “And strike our childhood houses” (27-28) Soto talks about childhood and how he has experienced everything. In Fifteen by William Stafford, the poem shows relationships with things in the past and how they can become something big. “ I thought about hills, and patting the handle got back a confident opinion. On the bridge we indulged 15 a forward feeling, a tremble. I was fifteen.” (12-15) Stafford is saying how he had a relationship with seventeen and how he was confident in himself and he can do anything he wants and can accomplish anything he can. “I found back of the willows one summer day a motorcycle with engine running as it lay on its side.”(1-4) Childhood became very different and difficult for Stafford and he has tried improving on adulthood.
