Video games genres can be categorized by the mechanics present within them. Fighting games have a distinct feel to them, but there is one that stands out. Super Smash Bros. presents a different formula than that the genre has been known for, but there is nothing that justifies that the game is bad just because it is different from the rest. In fact, the game proves to be really enjoyable. While Super Smash Bros. is considered a fighting game, it is drastically different from the traditional formula Street Fighter II presents, and even though it is a game meant to be played by kids, it has layers of depth that only adults understand.
Street Fighter II was the first game to introduce key features seen in a lot of fighting games. One key feature was the interface of the life bar and timer. Damage is displayed as percentages at the bottom of the screen and ranges from zero to 999 percent. Since most attacks do around one percent of damage, the role of damage is significantly downplayed, but damage is not entirely useless. As damage increase, characters get knocked back further with every hit, and certain moves start to kill at certain percentages. The objective changes from Street Fighter, and now, players have to knock their opponents off screen more than they do; since characters can be sent into the air or even off-screen, the decision to place the damage counter at the bottom was not a cosmetic change but a necessary one. Another change this brings is how long matches can last. Since it takes longer to damage and kill another player, matches last longer than a usual Street Fighter match, and the layout out changes to accommodate the changes in the mechanics
