Gender Expectations in Women Throughout history, men and women have been expected to present themselves in a certain way. From advertisements to newspaper articles, women specifically have experienced pressure to be the exact replication of a “perfect woman”. Thankfully, times have changed and women are more likely to be anything they would like and act however they want. Women in the 1950’s were viewed as the type of women in commercials: beauty and home oriented. In “The Ideal Woman” the author asserts this point, “Motherhood and the care of the home and husband are the ultimate goals of a woman's life and her greatest creative opportunity.” This article is threaded with ads from 1950-56 for Tide, Better Homes & Gardens, and Milkweed Cream. Modeling companies used to only have photoshopped ads and stick thin models, giving off an unrealistic image of beauty. However, companies have recently ditched the impractical standards by promoting the idea of all natural, self confidence. One prime example of this would be Dove. Dove has its own website focused solely on Self Esteem. “Globally, only 11% of girls would call themselves beautiful.” Often mentioning how global beauty-related anxiety is, the authors of this website share shocking statistics about how children are being raised already disliking themselves. 81% of 10-year-old girls in the à United States are afraid of being fat. Young girls are already thinking they should be skinny and pretty like the models on television.
