If there is a group of men who are rolling strollers in a park, are we going to eyeball them if they are a group of women? For the reason that nurturing a child has always been considered the mission of the mother in previous centuries, the concept of men being full-time caregivers is still new in this society. With the shifting of gender role away from the gender norm, the society is slowly recognizing their contribution, but this change is still unacceptable in some cultures. Regard the society’s belief, more and more men are willing to stay home as househusbands. The population of househusband has doubled in the last ten years, approximately 7 million, which equals to 32 percent of married fathers, according to Athomedad.org. The number increases from 1.5 million SAHDs in 2008 (economic crisis starts) to close to 2.1 million in 2009, Pew Research center estimates. On the other hand, for the upper class, SAHD is an option when mommies have better career paths that can cover expenses for both spouse and the children. Out of the cultural and social norm is what the previous generation and traditional people would perceive their decisions. This leads people to underestimate their capability to take care of their children and to do housework, says Scott Benner, in his book Life is “Short and Laundry is Eternal: Confessions of a Stay-at-Home Dad.” Even his family members assume he decides to go on an effortless road, such as lying in coach watching television or playing video games all day long.
In contradiction to what Benner’s family thought, househusband is a no break job. Cooking three meals a day, preparing snacks after meals, scheduling children nap time, diaper changing, (which at least six times per day, doing laundry, ) and dozens of other works to keep SAHDs busy.
