I have learned that the toys have a greater impact on teaching children gender roles. The easiest way to find toys is to filter by either girls or boys. There are many “neutral” toys, but like the filters girls and boys, there is not a neutral filter. It is probably not common for someone to go into a store and ask where the gender neutral toys are. Most people know if they are buying for a boy or a girl. I think toys are impacting the way children think about their gender. Walking into any store that has a large department of toys and automatically you can tell were the girls toys are because it is flooded with pink. From the toys I looked at a lot of them supported “traditional” gender roles. The girl toys had Barbies that come with accessories clothes, and shoes. The boy toys had action figure that came with weapons or a vehicle. This is already pushes the “traditional” gender roles. By age 3, boys already reject pink toys (Berger, 2014: 221). I believe they only reject pink because it’s a girl color. From the data I collected I realized that just because they are either girl or boy does not mean that boy are only limited to the boy toys and girls to girls. But labeling them girls and boys it already gives them a mindset that they cannot have toys from that section. Boys see that girl toys have to do with dolls, fashion, make up, cooking, mom roles, and so on. They eventually can come to the conclusion that those are only girl thing such as pink is only for girls. Girls see that boy toys have to do with weapons, action figures, sports, and so on. They come to the same conclusion that those things are only for boys. They see that girls are supposed to be moms and cook which are “traditional” roles. Girls see that boys are supposed to have cars and weapons, typical boy
