Gene Therapy Debate Gene therapy is the transplantation of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective one's. It may seem very helpful like, “curing” new diseases without drugs and untapped potential, but in reality it's not. I believe with using gene therapy, our society will be less accepting and will have more stereotypes. It also is very expensive and can create new diseases. We should not use gene therapy. One reason we shouldn’t use gene therapy is because it's unnatural and very risky. Gene therapy is slowly changing our world and the human race. This medical breakthrough is not only altering human DNA but is has the possibility to make “designer babies” It can change any DNA to be whatever you wants. While gene therapy is supposed to be used for curing diseases, they also are creating worse and new problems with that patient. For Example, “our body's immune system may see the newly introduced viruses as intruders and attack them. This may cause inflammation and, in severe cases, organ failure.” There is such a great risk when doing gene therapy and the probability of it actually working is very low. (Gene Therapy Mayo Clinic N.P) Gene therapy cost is unbelievable! Glybera (alipogene tiparvovec) became the first gene therapy approved in the west when Europe approved it in 2012. It's only been used once since being legalized because it cost about 1.4 million dollars. Other gene therapy treatment for Leber’s congenital amaurosis which is a rare inherited eye disease that appears at birth or in the first few months of life.
